Constellation Senior Players Championship: The Senior Players Championship (known as the Constellation Senior Players Championship for sponsorship reasons) is one of the five major championships on golf’s PGA Tour Champions.

Senior Players Championship

The inaugural event was played 34 years ago in 1983 and the lower age limit is 50, the standard for men’s senior professional golf tournaments. The winner gains entry into the following season’s Players Championship on the PGA Tour.

Unlike the U.S. Senior Open, the Senior PGA Championship and the Senior British Open, it is not recognized as a major by the European Seniors Tour, and is not part of that tour’s schedule.

Constellation Senior Players Championship

For many of the thousands of spectators attending this weekend’s Constellation Energy Senior Players Championship at the exclusive Caves Valley Golf Club, it will be their first and last time on the green. For Steve Glossinger, it’s home. And he wants to make sure fans, too, feel at home.

Glossinger has been superintendent of the 7,100-yard Owings Mills golf club for the past 20 years.

Glossinger and his 70-person staff get to work daily at 4:45 a.m. to prep the course for the day. The crew typically has until 9 a.m. to put the final touches on the greens and rough, but on Thursday only had until 7 a.m. because of the first tee time.

“We do course prep, cut greens, cutting ruff, hand watering dry spots…there’s a lot to do,” Glossinger said. “We have to get out ahead of the players, and then we come back out at 4 p.m. and do it all again.”

The Senior Players Championship — a major on the PGA Tour Champions — brings 78 golfers to town, including three-time defending winner Bernhard Langer. Constellation has been the title sponsor of the tournament since 2007, when it was held at Baltimore Country Club. It moved to TPC at Avenel Farm in Potomac in 2010, and has bounced around to East Coast cities.

It will be the first major men’s tournament Caves Valley has hosted since the U.S. Senior Open was played there in 2002.

“It’s been crazy,” Glossinger said of this weekend’s event. “This is a huge undertaking, the Senior Players Championship is a big deal, the real cream of the crop.”

Over 2,000 volunteers will help run the tournament, many of them from outside of the Baltimore area.

In addition to the volunteers, Glossinger said that Caves Valley has “ramped up” in every department in preparation for the tournament.

“It’ll be a test,” Glossinger said. “The rough is 3 inches high, the greens are fast, and a par 72 will be making for a tough tournament.”

In a busy second round at the 2017 U.S. Open, Paul Casey, Brian Harman, Tommy Fleetwood and Brooks Koepka finished in a four-way tie for the lead at seven under par.

Harman, Fleetwood and Koepka have posted scores of 67-70 in each of the first two rounds. Casey is the odd-man out of that group with a 71 on Friday, but the end result still has him in excellent position heading into the weekend.

United Leasing & Finance Championship 2017: Tour member Bryden Macpherson shot a 6-under 66 at Monday’s open qualifier for the United Leasing & Finance Championship, securing one of 12 available spots in this week’s field at Victoria National GC outside Evansville.

Macpherson, a University of Georgia alum, was powered by eight birdies on his card at Oak Meadow Golf Club, two of which came on his final three holes to offset a closing bogey.

United Leasing & Finance Championship 2017 Stream

Macpherson struggled as a Tour rookie in 2015, losing his card, but regained status by winning the 2015 PGA TOUR China Order of Merit. He never quite gained traction in 2016 either, recording just two top-25 finishes in 21 starts and finishing a distant 115th on the money list.

As players like JT Poston show, though, all it takes is one successful Monday-qualifying attempt and a good tournament week to turn a status-less season into something special. Poston open-qualified for last year’s United Leasing & Finance Championship, chipped in for eagle on his final hole to finish inside the top 25 and gain entry into the next event, and continued the magical run all the way to a PGA TOUR card.

Macpherson is no stranger to the big stage – the Australia native won the 2011 British Amateur to earn a spot in the 2012 Masters – and he’d love nothing more than to take the opportunity this week at Victoria National GC and run with it.

A field of 217 players, spread across two sites, competed for the 12 available spots this week.

Joining Macpherson in advancing from the Oak Meadow site were Scott Wolfes of St. Simons Island, Georgia (66); Conner Godsey of Rogersville, Alabama (66); William Kropp of Edmond, Oklahoma (66); Justin Lower of Charlotte, North Carolina (67); and Brandon Crick of McCook, Nebraska (67).

Three players shared medalist honors (6-under 66) at the Sultan’s Run GC site: Matt Davidson of Greenville, South Carolina; Zach Wright of St. Gabriel, Louisiana; and Ryan McCormick of Middletown, New Jersey.

Davidson, a Tour veteran, was forced to return to Q-School after finishing No. 104 on last year’s money list. He advanced to Final Stage but earned only conditional status for 2017, so a strong week in Evansville would do wonders for his status in subsequent reshuffles.

Wright, albeit a younger player, finds himself facing similar stakes this week: he earned conditional status via Final Stage of Q-School, and every dollar he can make at Victoria National will be significant for the reshuffle.

McCormick, 25, played a full season on Mackenzie Tour-PGA TOUR Canada in 2015, finishing 76th on the money list. He also open-qualified for the PGA TOUR’s Puerto Rico Open last month, where he missed the cut with rounds of 73-73.

Five players finished at 5-under 67 at Sultan’s Run, necessitating a playoff for the final three spots in the field. The playoff consisted of Clayton Portz, Trevor Smith, Taylor Pendrith, David Gazzolo and Trey Rule. Results were not available as of late Monday night.

Valero Texas open 2017: Tony Finau arrived at the 18th tee with a chance at a course record, but his approach splashed in the water and his bogey dropped him into a second-round tie for the lead with Bud Cauley at the Valero Texas Open on Friday.

A birdie at the par-5 final hole would have given Finau a share of the course record, but he settled for a 7-under 65 and is tied with Cauley at 8 under through 36 holes at TPC San Antonio.

Ian Poulter, Europe’s Ryder Cup star, missed the cut and lost his fully exempt status on the PGA Tour. He fell about $30,000 short of the required earnings to keep his status through a medical exemption because of a foot injury last year.

Cauley, a former NCAA standout at Alabama who’s yet to win through six seasons as a pro, had a lead at the halfway point after his 66 in the morning.

Texas open 2017 Live Stream

Cauley and Finau, winner last year at the Puerto Rico Open, both lead by one over 23-year-old Australian Cameron Smith, Kevin Chappell, Robby Shelton and veteran 1994 Texas Open winner Bob Estes.

Smith shared low round with Finau at 65, Chappell shot 68, Shelton had a 69, and 51-year-old Estes had a 69.

John Huh is 6 under after a 71, and he’s joined by Kevin Tway (68) and Jonathan Randolph (70).

There are seven players at 5 under, including first-round leader Branden Grace (73) and former Texas Open champs Jimmy Walker (69) and Martin Laird (67).

Walker, winner of the PGA Championship last summer, said he’ll start treatment for Lyme disease after this event. It may keep him from playing at New Orleans next week.

Finau holed a wedge shot from 105 yards for eagle on No. 11. A 22-foot birdie putt at 16 and a tap-in birdie on the next hole had him looking at tying the course record.

After his approach landed in shallow water in the creek fronting the 18th green, Finau played it out and chipped it past the green, rather than take the penalty drop.

“I did the same thing yesterday after going for the green (in two),” Finau said. “About half of the ball was out of the water. I got up-and-down yesterday. I know lightning doesn’t always strike twice.”

After a par at the first, Cauley’s early birdie streak included a 38-foot putt at 2. He avoided bogey all day, including a near 3-putt by sinking a 12-footer at No. 17.

“Putting saved me a lot today,” Cauley said, “and the putt (to save par) at 17 was huge. It was windy, and I knew I was going to miss some greens. When I did, I was able to leave it in a relatively easy spot and get up and down.”

Cauley is coming off his second top 10 of the year, a ninth place at RBC Heritage after a first-round 63 at Hilton Head.

After opening the tournament with even-par 72 Thursday, Smith jumped 68 spots on the leaderboard and finished with eagle-birdie. The eagle was a 90-yard blast from a bunker. He also chipped in from off the green for three birdies.

“Everything I hit, whether it was a rubbish shot or a good shot, kind of went close to the hole,” Smith said.

Cauley played through a medical exemption to keep his Tour card last year after shoulder surgery. It didn’t work for Poulter, the Englishman who’s played in five memorable Ryder Cup events for Europe.

“I’m healthy,” Poulter said. “I’m still going to be able to play golf. It doesn’t mean to say that the clubs are going to go away and you’re never going to see me again.”

Besides Poulter, notables missing the cut included U.S. Amateur champ Curtis Luck (73-72 in his pro debut), Billy Horschel (73-74), Luke Donald (76-72), Zach Johnson (74-74) and Keegan Bradley (77-74).

Defending champion Charley Hoffman, who shared the lead at the halfway point of the Masters this month, birdied his 17th hole to get to 1 under for the tournament and one shot inside the cut number.

The popular American, who won the 2014 WGC-HSBC Champions in Shanghai, tied for 29th in the inaugural Shenzhen International at Genzon Golf Club in 2015 and followed up with a share of eighth last year.

2017 Shenzhen International

Watson, ranked as high as World Number Two in early 2015, shot closing rounds of 65 and 66 for the past two years at Genzon and the nine-time PGA TOUR winner wants to match that form in his early rounds this week.

“For sure, I’m hoping to start as well as I usually finish. I’ve just got to get better and make a few more putts early on,” said the 38-year-old Watson, currently World Number 22 and the field’s top-ranked player.

Shenzhen International 2017 Live Stream

“Maybe the past couple of years I’ve wanted it so bad and there’s nervous energy because of wanting to win a trophy. Then, when you’re a little behind at the weekend, maybe it frees up my game.”

Watson, 38, changed to a lighter putter for last year’s Shenzhen International, but this year is using a heavier one as he tries to master Genzon’s tricky greens.

“Last year I went lighter thinking I might swing it a bit faster, but the Ping engineers said it’s better to go heavier when the greens are a little bit slower,” said Watson, who is notably slimmer after being on a healthy diet for the past few months.

“Golfers have their stroke and there’s no way to change it, so the heavier putter’s just going to give it a bigger mass, a bigger hit. This time it’s 20 grams heavier.”

For the third successive year, Watson will play with China Number One Li Haotong for the first two rounds, and the high-profile pair will be joined on Thursday and Friday by English star Tommy Fleetwood, the field’s second-ranked player.

Like Watson, Fleetwood is also full of motivation after twice coming close to winning at Genzon. The Englishman was second at the 2014 Volvo China Open at Genzon then just missed out on the playoff at the 2015 Shenzhen International when he finished a stroke behind eventual champion Kiradech Aphibarnrat of Thailand and China’s Li Haotong.

“I’ve always enjoyed playing at Genzon and played well around here. I’ve had a second and a third here, so it either suited my eye or I’ve turned up swinging it well,” said Fleetwood, the World Number 33.

“In 2015, I played really well but left a lot of shots out there, so I really did feel like I’d let one slip by as I just didn’t putt well enough.”

The 26-year-old is now enjoying his best-ever season, having held off current World Number One Dustin Johnson to win January’s Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship for his second European Tour title and finished runner-up to Johnson at last month’s WGC-Mexico Championship.

“I was playing really well towards the end of last year, started getting top 10s and finished third in Hong Kong. I was close to winning, but that was where I felt I was making good progress,” Fleetwood said.

“The next step was to actually win and that just happened to be in Abu Dhabi. I then played great in Mexico and if you’re going to get good results, those are the type of tournaments to do it in. Dustin and I are now 1-1, so it’s a good rivalry!”

Wu is making his Shenzhen International debut, although he played the 2014 Volvo China Open at Genzon. The 31-year-old won the Volvo China Open when it was held in Shanghai in 2015 and last year triumphed at the Lyoness Open in Austria to become the first Chinese to win a European Tour title in Europe.

The first player from his country to win two European Tour titles, Wu is now bidding to become the first Chinese to win the Shenzhen International, but admits he would be delighted if any of his compatriots emerged victorious.

“I hope a Chinese player can win the Shenzhen International. Every European Tour event in China is very, very important for Chinese players, so I would be happy if any Chinese player could win. I played a round on Monday and it was amazing – the conditions are perfect,” Wu said.

“Obviously winning my first European Tour title was a great experience as I was the first Chinese to win my country’s national Open. When I won in Austria, my coach (Joe Thiel) was there for a couple of days, as my swing had been a little bit off, so he improved my swing and my confidence. I will just try my best this week.”

Last year, Wu represented China at the Olympics with Li – who’s also in this week’s field – then teamed up with his good friend at the World Cup of Golf in Australia, where they tied for second to secure China’s best-ever result in the prestigious team tournament.

“The World Cup was an amazing week. I like playing the team format and playing with Li Haotong, my friend. We’ve played a lot of tournaments together, I know him well and he knows me very well, too, so it’s a great partnership.”

Other top contenders at Genzon include Austria Number One Bernd Wiesberger, Denmark’s Thorbjorn Olesen and France Number One Victor Dubuisson, a member of the victorious 2014 Ryder Cup team.
